Goal Board
It’s not too late to start a goal board! In my last post, I gave you two worksheets of reflection that will prepare you for making a goal board. In this post I want to explain how I make my goal boards and give you some examples of what your goals could be. Remember, this is supposed to be fun, so get creative and put your own twist on it.
How to make a goal board:
Reflect on what worked in 2020 and what didn’t and think about what could improve your life.
Then take this reflection and formulate goals for yourself. They don’t have to be big goals, but just think of a few. I wrote 8 goals but you can write more or less; whatever works for you. I brainstormed my goals in my notes page on my phone so that I could think about every goal before I finalized them.
-I reflected on my 2020 and realized that I want to stop worrying as much because when you are worrying you are thinking about the past or future. In this case, I made one of my goals to live in the present.
Now it’s time to have some fun! Head to your local craft store and gather supplies.
-What you will need: A board big enough for the goals you have planned, paper (I bought small squares of paper so I could write each goal down on one piece), and any fun decorations you want. Examples: markers, stickers, fun lettering, washi tape, etc.
Once you have your supplies, think of how you want your board to look and start assembling. The most important part of a goal board is that you include a plan for how you will complete each goal. Goals are not going to get completed on their own so try to think of a plan that is as detailed as possible.
-For example, under my goal “Live in the present” I made a few bullet note reminders such as:
-“work on enjoying each moment for what it is. Stay in the present!”
-“don’t try to plan every moment of your life out. Know that you will complete all the tasks you need to.”
-Then I explained how I was going to stay in the present:
-“I will close my eyes, take three deep breaths, and fully submerge in the moment.”
-“I will tell myself that I will figure everything out, but for now I will enjoy what is in front of me.”
-Lastly, I included quotes. I love this part because there are some quotes that read your mind but you would never have thought of them on your own. In this case, Once you have written your reminders for yourself and your plan, look up some quotes that pertain to your goal and write down the ones you like. This will provide inspiration going forward and a reminder of why you included the goal in the first place.
Only you know what you need, so take time to think about what that is. Everyone will have different goals and different ways of completing them! I also wanted to add that you can include the things you did well from the previous year as goals too. For example, on one of the cards I wrote, “Keep doing what you are doing,” and under it I wrote some of the things that I thought I did well and want to keep doing.
Why write a goal board:
I know many people are wondering, “Why should I write a goal board?” Well, there are so many reasons.
It’s so much fun and a great way to bond with a family member or friend if you do it together. I did it with my sister and we had a blast. We went to the store together and then watched “Gilmore Girls” as we completed our boards. Completing goals with another person can also provide some accountability.
As I’ve said before, writing down a plan of action is the best way to insure completion of a goal to the best of your ability.
Writing down the goal itself helps to get it out of your head and on paper so that you remember it.
Ellavate it:
Put your board in a place where you will see it often so then you are reminded of it every day. I put mine in my room so that I can see it all the time.
Some goal ideas:
-Workout (pick an amount of days that seems realistic)
-Eat less processed foods
-Take more time for yourself
-Work on progress and not perfection
-Love yourself/ improve self love
-Meditate (once again pick an amount of time you will meditate for and for how many days)
Obviously these are just a few goal ideas so you can do whatever you want!
